I have sharp pain in my heel – what could be causing it?

There are many possible conditions that cause heel pain. The most common is plantar fasciitis but there are many others: fractured calcaneus, baxters nerve entrapment, bursitis, achilles tendonpathy, tibialis posterior dysfunction, or particularly what used to be called Sever’s Disease in children.

How does a podiatrist treat heel pain?

Orthotic therapy – the prescription of customised foot orthotics – is the single most effective treatment for this type of condition. Other solutions may involve:

  • Rest – decreased frequency of exercise
  • Cold presses or ice packs
  • Anti-inflammatory tablets
  • Cushioning
  • Massaging the foot
  • Muscle strengthening
  • Stretching exercises

Healing time varies widely on a case-by-case basis. The quicker heel pain is treated, the better the outcome will be.

What can I do to help ease my heel pain?

Wearing appropriate footwear is important in mitigating heel pain, in particular avoiding thongs or ballet flats as much as possible. As our podiatrists focus on biomechanics, we are experts in shoe recommendation.
